McQuillan Has Left UConn Football Team

Sean McQuillan is no longer a member of the UConn football program, head coach Bob Diaco told reporters Friday.

Diaco made the announcement before the second annual Women's 101 Football Clinic.

Diaco said earlier this week, McQuillan, a Glastonbury native who attended Avon Old Farms, was in the midst of appealing a disciplinary action by the school following an April arrest for fighting with his roommate for which he faces felony assault charges.

"We're without Sean McQuillan," Diaco said. "I just got that word. Sean will be a graduate of the university and move on."

Diaco went out of his way on two different occasions during the spring to compliment McQuillan on his leadership and play on the field. McQuillan would have been a captain in 2015.

"Absolutely disappointed," Diaco said. "I wish him well and he will do well."

McQuillan has graduated.

"He accomplished everything he needed to do to graduate," Diaco said.

McQuillan caught 16 passes for 158 yards and one touchdown last season. He caught 41 passes for 354 yards and two TDs in his career.

McQuillan's case has been continued to July.

Position Still Strong

It would have been a bonus to have McQuillan's experience in 2015, but talent-wise, the Huskies will be fine at tight end.

The group, now likely led by sophomore Tommy Myers, is a good one — just young.

At least four are in the Huskies' incoming recruiting class.

"If we want to play with tight ends, which we do, we're going to have to force feed some of these true freshmen coming in," Diaco said. "We have three, four true freshmen (who are) accomplished tight ends. Maybe one was going to take a look at outside linebacker, but I think it's important we take a good, hard look at those guys to see who can participate."

Clinic 'Great Cause'

There were about 200 participants at the women's clinic Friday. All proceeds from the event went to benefiting programs for women's cancer prevention and treatment at UConn Health. The participants enjoyed a nice greeting into the Burton Family Football Complex after registering, a cocktail hour, silent auction and a little meet-and-greet before heading inside for drills and fun on the field.

"It's a great turnout, max capacity, everybody is full of energy," Diaco said. "It's a great cause."

Ashiru To Maryland

Maryland announced Friday that former UConn linebacker Jefferson Ashiru had transferred to Maryland and would be eligible immediately.

Ashiru graduated with a degree in economics.

"I'm really excited to join the Maryland football program and have the opportunity to compete in the Big Ten Conference," Ashiru said in a statement. "I have known Coach Edsall and was also recruited by (Maryland defensive backs coach) Darrell Perkins, so those relationships played a key role in my decision to come to Maryland."

Ashiru left the UConn team in November amid some controversy on whether he was forced to leave the team. Diaco denied that then and said Friday he doesn't feel as though he has forced anyone to leave.

People close to the team said sophomore Junior Joseph was playing better at that time and was competing very hard with Ashiru.
