Former Cass Tech football player Sardin dies in crash

Former Detroit Cass Tech football player Ke'Von Sardin, 18, died in a car crash over the weekend, according to an aunt.
Sardin, a slot back, running back and kick returner, had committed to play at Siena Heights in the fall.
Details of the crash remained incomplete Sunday night. Detroit police did not return phone calls from the Free Press. A male passenger also appears to have died in the crash.
Jada Walk, Sardin's aunt, said the incident occurred near Conner and Engleside early Sunday morning.
"We don't know exactly what time it happened," Walk said. "One of the witnesses told his father (Kevis Sardin) that he saw the whole thing. ... There was a water puddle on Conner, and Ke'Von swerved to try to avoid it and he lost control of the car. The car hit a pole and a fence."
Sardin, at 6 feet, 185 pounds, did a little bit of everything for Technicians, annually one of the state's top teams. He had seven career touchdowns, around 700 all-purpose yards and three kick return TDs.
When Cass Tech coach Thomas Wilcher heard the news, he couldn't believe it. He was working at a summer camp Sunday when a number of his players flooded him with text messages saying Sardin had died.
"He wanted to be a great athlete, and he wanted to do whatever it took to be a great athlete," Wilcher said. "One thing about Ke'Von was, once it got to the football season, he was always ready to go. He was happy. His whole life lit up when football started. That's when his grades got better. Everything had to do with football season."
On Facebook, Sardin listed his most memorable game as against Detroit Northwestern, when he scored his first prep touchdown. He also listed back-to-back touchdowns against Detroit Pershing as his greatest achievement on the football field.
Funeral arrangements are pending.
